Simply because the 8.8 is almost a bolt-in to late model jeeps, and very easily available because they were in Ford Explorers. Its mainly about the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern.

Plus, 9"s are getting older and less available at JYs.

According to the specs I saw somewhere, the 8.8 shafts are actually stronger than the 9" shafts.

On top of that, the 8.8 from an exploder is just under 55" wide, whereas the 9" needs to be cut down to fit under a jeep, thus custom axle shafts.

I believe the Exploder 8.8" is 58"ish wide, and early Bronco 9" are about the same width. Its the full size truck 9" that are wider than Jeep axles, but only 4".

Yep. And the 9" can accept 35 and 40 spline axleshafts.

Yeah, I was shooting from memory on the 8.8 width...

The stock Jeep D35 axle is 60.5" wide, and the Exploder 8.8 is 59.75" wide.
