I am getting ready to buy some tube soon to do some custom fender flares, and was wondering what wall thickness would be best?

They need to be able to take some moderate tree abuse, but I want to keep the weight down. I was planning on using 1-1/4 Chrome Moly, but they have all different thicknesses.. Would .085 be too thin, too thick, or just about right?

And is $0.32/in a decent price for 1-1/4 .085 Tube?

Anyone else on the west side of the state want to go in on tube to get the qty higher? It goes way down in price the more you get. The steel supplier is by silver lake.

1-1/4 .095 13 Gauge is probably more common.
12 Ga = .109
11 Ga = .120
and then 1/8" .125 ;)

DOM tubing in .095 would probably work fine. Roll cage stuff is usually about 11 ga.

.32/ft is not bad.

the question is... can you weld... :hehe:

Chromoly is the same weight as mild steel.

It is somewhere around 25% stronger so you can gauge what wall thickness you'll need by that.

.095 chromoly = about the same as .120 DOM

There are some concerns when welding chromoly. Without post heat treating it can crack in the HAZ. IMO cromoly is not worth the trouble for something minor, like fenders. If weight was a concern and you are building an entire car and had the $$ and facilities to do it correctly then it would be beneficial.

i agree. its not worth the pre and post weld prep for just fenders. i would use DOM or HREW tube.

for my tube fenders and flares i am planning 1.5 in HREW tubing with a .125 wall thickness.

--edit-- for those who don't know, HREW stands for Hot Rolled Electric Weld. DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel

Wow, thanks for the awesome information...

I myself, cannot weld worth a damn, but I have a certifiable (crazy that is) expert welder at my disposal.

I talked to him about the price and since he has all kinds of wierd connections, he remarked that his current price is much much cheaper, since he buys A LOT of the stuff.

Thanks again for the info.

1 1/4" 1/8" wall HREW that's what I used on my fenders and flares. I like'em.
