Looking at some new LED Taillights for the truck. Does anyone know how it works if one bulb goes out? Can you exchange the individual LED or is the whole thing toast after one goes out??

It will work if one LED in the pod goes out. And no, you can not replace just one single LED in the pod....unless you are Haggar. :hehe:
No really, they are soldered in and then usually sealed so you can't really get to them easily.

Realistically, there's nothing you can service in there. Even if you were able to get in and remove the old/resolder the new LED in there, you don't know what LED to put in there. They have different voltage, current, and light output characteristics. It can adversely affect the new part, and the other parts, if the V/I characteristics are different.
On the plus side, unless you run them above their limits, LEDs are extremely reliable. Most have lifetimes in the 1000-10000 hour range, and don't really burn out. As they age, they just get dimmer. So if a part is rated to 10000 hours, it means that after 10000, it'll be working, just at 50% brightness unstead of 100%.
If it fails, it would be much more likely due to a broken solder joint.
I wouldn't worry about it.

The beauty of the design, and the reason that fedex and ups now uses them as well as a lot of busses, is that if an LED dies, the assembly continues to work.
