after driving for a while if i shut off my truck when i re-start it it is stuck in 2nd gear, all i will have is second and reverse.
the only way to get it to shift again is to shut off the truck and disconect the battery for a while
do that and it works fine

That sounds like the limp-home mode.
I have nothing more of value to add :(

Im going to guess the solienoids in the pan . Also there is a fuse that is not marked as a tranny fuse but it is . Id pull every fuse out of the fuse box and look at them . One says trans on it the other does not but it effects the trans . Shaker just ran into this on his GMC . On DI his would not down shift , wanted to take off in 2nd gear .

its deff going into a limp mode by staying in second
i jumped the test and ground leads on the ALDL (DLC) and got codes 12,13 and 81
12 is a ghost code,
13 is a open 02 sensor code and could be part of the reason the truck is getting shitty gas mileage,
81 is a 2-3 shift selenoid circuit fault
gona get under it this weekend and test resistance on the 2-3 shift selenoid

its back together and everything seems to be working good, shifts nice and smooth.
rover fixed a throttle body leak, and fixed the back brakes (did have any for a week or two)
and i repaired the rotted out exhaust so we could put a new oxy sensor in
i didnt know how bad she was running till now
