some of you know my jeep but here are some older pics of where it started.

me wheeling stock in alaska.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/img005.jpg

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/img006.jpg

then i got bored and painted it camo.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/img003.jpg

up to this point i had done the following

2" budget lift
31" tires on 15x8 steels
flat fender (due to tree)
front and rear bumpers
gutted the carpet and rear seat
borla cat back

fast forward a few more years and this is as it sits now.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/0513081946.jpg

another repaint to solid tan
new used hard top
rocker guards
still 31" tires but steels painted to match body
safari snorkel
new front bumper and grill guard
replace front springs with cherokee springs to level the body
tuffy center console
tuffy rear security drawer

also up to this point
rebuilt the trans twice
blown the rear carrier
two radiators
front axle yoke blown
overheated and warped/cracked head

now for this years plans.

4" long arm lift
35" BFG muds
8K winch
new front bumper w/ grill hoop
tube front fenders
rock rails
new rear bumper
sye and novak shift kit for 231
waggy 44 w/ 79 ford f150 outers and 4.10s w/aussie
ford explorer 8.8 rear w/4.10s and LS
on board air w/ electric pump
replace snorkel with homemade design
tire carrier to handle the 35s

i will take pics when i remember to show my progress.

here are a few pics of my parts collection.

axles and OBA compressor (thanks again rover). also the axle shafts and tubes for control arms are behind the axles.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/0630081918.jpg

winch, ford axle parts, and tube for rock rails and steering.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/0630081919a.jpg

CJ tire carrier (thanks again bry), more tube for rock rails and control arms, and one BFG with sidewall gash (might tube it for a trail spare). the blue tub has a spare steering gear box which i am going to tap for hydro assist.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/0630082043.jpg

the four good BFGs, OBA tank, and the rest of my brake parts for front and rear axles. also my half door frames waiting to be skinned with sheet steel.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/BIGBEN68/0630082045b.jpg

the tube for the control arms is 2" DOM with a .25 wall thickness. i am planning johnny joints at both ends. three link front and four link rear. i am planning to use 1.5" DOM with a .25 wall on both the front and rear track bars. also using johnny joints at both ends.

steering will be made of the same 1.5" tube as the track bars, but using heim joints instead of tie rod ends.

the tank is about a six gallon tank that was salvaged from an old garage compressor. i have the pressure switch set up to work from 80psi to 120 psi. with a 140 psi safety valve i shouldn't ever blow the tank. right now i only have the air chuck in the back. i still need to install a pressure gauge and when i do that i will be running a line up under the hood with a second air chuck.

I believe those trails (going from the end of West Ave to 19Mile are considered seasonal roads, at least thats what the sign on the 19mi entrance says.) so my assumption was that if you felt like driving on them in a season when they werent maintained (which, for those ones, is all seasons) it was up to you.

yes, i am actually working on this.

i got the front springs i am going to use. they are some brand of 3in lift springs. can't tell you what brand. i plan to use the front cherokee springs i am currently running as my new rear springs. i also got the driveshafts i am going to cut down to use with my sye.

the big thing i did today was to open up the dana 44 and start swapping the gears (actually, rover will be setting up my gears). it seems a little water got into the housing while i had the shafts out for a year or so. i have a little cleaning to do. it is a good thing i wasn't planning to reuse the old carrier because it was wasted due to the rust. sorry, no pics of the rust.

While the tubes are plenty big in dia. they are not all that thick. Honestly I do not like drilling into the housing and MAYBE creating a stress riser from the hole

With the capabilites you and Rover have I`d just weld `em with some hi nickel rod. Add a simple truss that ties the outboard ends of the tubes to the housing will help to stiffen it up as well as help keep the tubes from spinning.

IMHO the 8.8 can me made dang near bullet proof for the typical wheeling we do out here. There are plenty of 8 second drag race cars running the 8.8 with great results.

Only reason I want to change is to straighten the DS out.

with all the suspension crap (upper control arms and coil springs) in the way i can't do a truss all the way to the outer ends of the tubes. i am thinking of making a small truss between the upper control arm mounts and bracing that to the diff cover and the housing by the pinion. i can then continue the truss from the control arm mounts to the spring pads.

well, i took the grinder to the lip on the 44. took off about 3/8" so far and i may go back at it. at most i will take about 1/2" off the lower lip. not much but a half inch is a half inch.

BIGBEN
11-05-2008, 07:54 PM
ok, i lied about the pics. forgot to take them before i put the cover on.

but, i now have an aussie locker in the 44. :woot:

very nice construction and very easy to install, other than i had to pull the carrier back out and remove the ring gear to do the install. no big deal.

and after removing the cover and looking how much material i had left to grind on the bottom, i will leave it at 3/8". i don't want to sacrifice strength around the diff cover bolts for a little extra clearance under the pig. the front now has an inch extra clearance over the rear 8.8 so i will spend my time seeing what i can do with that instead.

tomorrow i have some axle shaft u-joints to replace as well as some spindle bearings. it is starting to come together.

BIGBEN
11-06-2008, 08:40 PM

and for future reference. yes the 03 heater fit with only one mod. due to the orientation of the blower motor you have to cover a hole in the firewall. and a 99 heater wouldn't fit a newer jeep due to this needed hole.

sorry, i didn't take any pics before i put everything back together. but next time you see me i can show you the hole i had to patch. :hehe:

after doing a little bit of measuring this weekend i have had a few ideas.

i have been wanting to put the air filter in place of the battery to work with the snorkel that i am planning. i also want to do a dual battery set-up.

so the problem i have had is where to put the batteries. i had thought about putting them in the back but really don't want power cables that long. but then it hit me, and i am not meaning that bowling ball. :hehe:

i can move the original battery up and forward a bit so it is in front of the computer. that should leave enough room underneath it for a box to be built to house the new air filter. the second battery i have an even more interesting plan for. a ffew years ago i modified the seat brackets to move both seats back about 4 inches so i can fit more comfortably. this leaves a lot of floor space on the passenger side. it looks like i can make a box/bracket to mount the new battery on the floor under the heater unit. and it looks like there is still plenty of leg room on that side even with the battery mounted there.

so once i get back to school this fall i will have to start working on these. pics as soon as i can.

BIGBEN
06-29-2009, 03:28 PM
well, it sucks having most of your parts across state, but i did have a few more things i could finish here.

i mounted the remote speaker for my CB. it won't help that i usually can't hear things. :hehe:

i also took the new knuckles for the front axle to a shop i worked for. they let me use one of thier machines to take the tie rod hole and bore it out to 3/4". now i just need to weld a brace to the knuckle so that the rod ends will be in double shear.

the license plate on the jeep is DRTJEEP. it means dirt jeep. this has nothing to do with it being dirty or for offroad, it is a variaton of the phrase dirt cheap. i am refering to the fact that i am making the mods to this jeep as cheaply as possible.

so it is a jeep that will be made as dirt cheap as possible. to simplify all of that, i have changed the spelling of cheap to be cheep, because jeep has EE instead of EA

so, the name of the project is Dirt Cheep. :thumb:

which you will now understand has nothing to do with birds. :junk:

If you're going with hockey pucks at least do yourself a favor and use a metal sleeve that goes through the puck and body mount.

i have some 7/8 tube with a 1/2 ID that i had planned to use for this. :thumb:

the puck is just to stabilize everything. and eventually i am going to cut the mount brackets off the frame and move them up an inch to remove the puck altogether. but that is a later project.

i am starting work on the tire carrier tomorrow and should have that done next week (as long as my new taillights come in).

the front knuckles go into the lab next to get a little bit of welding work, then the front axle goes in for its brackets.

then the rear axle.

then the rear bumper needs some modification.

then pam is getting a new bumper/tire carrier.

and no, i don't want full width for this jeep. :hehe:

I still think its do-able without any type of break or anything.. A couple molds, warm it up to cherry red, and bend away.

BIGBEN
02-10-2010, 11:34 PM
we have a hydraulic press brake. small bend every .25 inch would have done it. or heat it up and bend it over a form. either would work.

we are a fab shop, of sorts. we can do anything. :D

that is one of the things i realized. my visibility behind me is already pretty bad and the tire would make it worse.

ok, this whole tire in the back of the jeep concept has been driving me insane. i am trying to fit five pounds of shit in a five pound bag. i need to put everything in a perfect place to make it all work.

but i finally figured it out. the tire can still be put under the storage trunk like originally planned. but to make that possible i will have to deflate the tire to 5 to 10 psi. just enough to keep the beads from popping. then it will be able to slide through the tailgate opening and under the trunk. everything else will mount on top of the trunk like before. and seeing i have an OBA system in the jeep i can re-inflate the spare when needed. it should all work perfectly. now i just need to start bolting it all in. :hehe:
