Damn thing...

95 XJ 4.0

Replaced t-stat, sending unit, flushed system with acid.

Runs 210 degrees all the time. In town, on the trail, can idle for hours without issue. Fine up to 55 mph on the road.

Somewhere between 55 and 70 there is a magic spot that causes it to overheat.

WTF is going on.

head gasket ... i dunno might even be a thing with even a air valance or fan

Head gasket? Let it idle with the radiator cap off and look for bubbles.

I think with the whole stinger set up slopped you are putting a lot of air under rather then through the radiator area . The holes are doing no good for air to the rad as it is plated all the way across the winch mount area . Is there a ac core in front of the radiator too ?

Higher speed you are directing the air way from the grill . The slower you go the easier the fan can pull it into the grill . Thats my 1st suspcion .

like grandman said if you have a bumper that has a huge angled face and a winch to boot you are creating a huge air dam throwing the air everywhere at highway speeds. also make sure the clutch is working properly on the mechanical fan and also make sure the electric fan is functioning properly. the electric one should kick in a touch over the 210 mark, I think at like 215 or220 can't remember.

Electric fan is working properly.

Clutch fan is a little light but not a big deal at highway speeds. I have a fan that has a clutch that is MUCH stiffer but it's loud at idle and cold...meaning it's bad in the other way. Maybe i'll put that one in and see.

I ran into the fan issue on the Grand , the old one you didnt hear , you would see it run . I installed a new clutch and it sounded like you were running a prop on the front but it never over heated again .

I swapped the noisy one out for the quiet one. Damn it.

The noisy one sounded like a stock S-Blazer fan. I hate that sound.

But I would rather be able to drive 70. :hehe:

The grand got hot when i was climbing hills that sort of thing , not at high way speed . I still think the bumper set up has to do with an air flow problem but if the fan out pulls it problem solved .

I had this problem a while ago on my TJ and only a new radiator fixed it.
