I was looking for the fuse for the airbag in my 95 XJ. Well, it doesn't have one. So we pulled the airbag out to unplug it.....yea well it doesn't have any electrical connections.
It says fully mechanical air bag on it. I took out the 4 nuts on the back and removed the module that inflates the air bag. The bag itself stays in the center portion of the steering wheel.
Anyway, now I have this bomb looking thing on my desk and I would like to know how it works and how to set it off safely so I can store it and use it as a learning thingy.
I have never sen anything like this...and I have been doing this stuff for a long time.
Pics after work for those interested.
:wtf: i have never heard or seen anything like that

I know Jeep at least used them in that timeframe. Sorry, don't remember much about them, though. Some type of inertia based detonator switch was used, IIRC.
Throw it at beefy and see what happens...

Funny, I was thinking.. I wonder what would happen if you got a standard airbag, set up with a battery switch, and put it under someones camp chair by the fire. Wait tilll the right moment, and push the button...

Id suggest talking to a local body shop , them bags are exspensive as hell . Im sure they would be more then happy to swap you for one thats went boom and throw in some funds to boot . Given the age of your XJ i could be wrong how ever , may be to old to see many of them being repaired .

I have tried selling them to body shops. None around here wanted them. :wtf:
Apperently it is a hassal to use a used air bag.

They can but they have to have a paper trail of were it came from. VIN number and car fax.

I thought about that but I want the center of the wheel to look normal and not all f-ed up.

Ok, here is the "Gas Generator" part of the airbag. It is removable and is not attached to the airbag part of the system.
Looks like a damn land mine.

those can be really dangerous. they set an airbag upside down buy the (ex)body shop wing of the auto building here and it cleared into the servicefloor parking lot. you should remember how far that is. I guess what I'm saying be very careful if you decide to set if off and I personally wouldn't mess with that one because it takes a hit to deployed it and I could see it going badly. granted you don't have the bag inflating just a puff of air.

I for some reason am thinking that if the steering colom collapses it has something that hits the back of the airbag. maybe pokes into that hole in the back they don't want you to put anything in. again those have the potential to kill you so be careful setting it off(i see what looks to be the bag material in the pics all contained in that little unit)

I read up on it. It has a spring loaded striker, sorta like a flint, that is called a detonator. Pretty harmless at this point because there is no bag. It will generate a bit of heat and a burst of air, but that's really it now.

Yea, we tried. Had the video set up. All that happened was we dented the metal.
I don't know how you would set it off, but at least I now know that dropping one probably won't set it off.

Air bags generally only go off in head on collisions. Side and rear impacts don't set them off. Did you make sure it hit the ground so that it stopped like a frontal collision?

Kind of hard to make sure it landed one way or another by throwing it in the parking lot while we cowered by the dumpster. :hehe:
We even had a fire man there.
He was no help.
