took a trip to the local Meijers to get bulbs and some wiper blades. Figured it'd be a good test run, 15 or so minutes each way, fairly low speed, knew the area, etc.

All was going well when 3rd gear in the T-18 decided it didn't want to work anymore about half way back on the return trip.

the dashboard hit it kind of with the boot on it so I took that off this afternoon. no difference.

decided to drain it, and this is what my brand new gear oil thats maybe 40 miles old tops looked like...

There also a bunch of sludge feeling stuff on the bottom, I couldn't get a pic of it as it slid off the end of the magnet too quick.

The froth in the above picture used to cover about 40% of the surface. By the time I got the camera it had foamed down. it sounded like a sped-up pop fizzing as it was draining, and kinda did it after it had drained a bit too. I think maybe it got water in it somehow. But I can't imagine where because I had drained all the old junk out and filled it all back up.

The magnet

of all the Jerry-rigging, booty fab, general redneck fixes and cobbled together bits, THIS is what had to break. and I didn't even get to wheel it yet.

just drained the pan through a screen. was kinda slow so we only put a little through it but it was still filled with brass shavings, along with the bottom of the pan. It was like panning for gold!... kinda...

Yea, he blew up his diff and has brass in it. Brass isn't very strong. I didn't even know they made diff gears out of brass.

What kind of freakin Jeep needs a shifter that long? You must have like a 12 inch body lift. That's probably your problem.

I was thinking, it's possible that the torque converter went bad. There is a brass backed clutch thing in there and the brass from that could have gotten into your trans. Maybe when you changed your fluid you forgot to drain the torque converter and it had water in it from like rain or something.

But that doesnt explain why his diff blew up.
