View Full Version : Which to do first

Plan on starting on the waggy project. Which one would you do first? Its run pretty well. Usual oil pressure problem but it is still ok. Do i pull the motor and rebuild the motor or do i put the 6" lift and new tires on first? I plan moving the gas tank to the rear where the spare tire used to be and replace the section of frame always rots.
I want to have this done by spring and plan to use it to tow the cj around and use it for mobile repair/rescue vehicle. It will have 33 or 35's on it. It already has onboard air and plan to keep a small generator plus my 110 hobart and torches etc...
Where would you start?

what kind of oil pressure issues?
AMC V8's can be finicky, some brand new will run a lower than what you think il pressure and be good.
Also if your only planning on running 33's or 35's you are fine with a 4" lift.
When I lifted mine 4" I could easily stick 35's on it. I did end up trimming 1" off of the fenders for a touch more clearance, but even before that i never rubbed a tire

That is what i was thinking. What do think should i go with 4 barrel carb and intake? I can get one pretty easy. It already sucks the gas. Would it make it alot better or i have another 2 barrel.
Bore it 30 over or hone it and just rering?
Just trying to get a plan together. Thanks ty

I got better mileage running a 4bbl carb (used the stock intake and just a 2bbl to bbl adapter)
reason, 4bbl has secondaries, so normally the primaries are smaller then your standard 2bbl.
If your current intake is fine, I would just adapt a 4bbl to it. Cheaper and it'll still run great

That is good to know. I was planning on a 4 or 6" rusty's lift. I cant go soa becuz the springs sag more than i like. I have 50 lbs at startup and once its warmed up i carry about 25lbs at 55 mph and 10 at idle. Not that worried about it for what i use it for now. But if im gonna dump $$ into it i would like it to last.

I like that idea for the carb. That just went to #1 one the list. Carb change will definitely change the way the engine runs. Putting a new fuel pump on too.

When you do that fuel pump, just buy some hard line to start with.
When I changed the one on my 89 (back in like 2003 or 2002) I ended up replacing all of the hard line back to the tank as it was in bad enough shape to warrant it

Well the first thing is to buy some beer for the guys shop you are going to be using, then sweet talk him into breaking out his Northern Auto Parts catalog to order the rebuild kit for the motor.
Yea i say we get the motor and frame first that way we have something to bolt the lift onto...

25lbs isn't too terrible.
run that biatch, maybe a little heavier oil to help out PSI if you are really worried about it. ( I wouldn't be personally)
fix frame rot and lift+ tires.
