Okay, so Ray filled the rear diff today, he said it was a little low. Trouble is (or not) it isn't leaking at all now. We aren't positive the driveway puddle came from me, it's just where I usually park, give or take 10 feet. Of course, we have all kinds of vehicles go through here. Ray was pretty sure it was rear end dope. The diff had one small drop of oil on it and I wiped it off, now that it's full....no leak at all.

Does it have to be driven to leak????

Should I take it in???

if its comming out the pinion seal it has to be driven to leak. also if the vent tube is clogged it will blow out the weakest seal. drive it for alittle while and check  diff fluid should have a good stink to it also

just take the cover off and redo the seal (RTV) drain and clean the edges where the seal is and and make sure u give it some good time to "dry" before you fill it up again.

pinion seal would be another issue. a little tougher to change but still wouldnt waste ur time with dealer prices on fixing that kinda stuff.

how long could I get away with driving it?

would it make it to Sams?

I'd like to do it myself to learn.

if it leaks....just fill it up like sam does, his was built to leak:hehe:

To me it could sound like a pinion seal. A pinion seal is that small seal that goes inside your axle at the spot where the rear driveshaft connects at the yoke (u-joint). It is directly behind that. I would check that area for "wetness" and oil residue. Any oil on the skid plate or underneath the jeep, in unusual places that would look like it was "splashed" around? You can see the discoloration of the gear lube if it has touched the paint as well. It will make it look very dark in spots where it has touched, even if you cant essentially "feel" the oil.

.drains the mud back out easyer that way.
if it was only a little low its prob. not leaking that badly and youll be fine to get it here, or just top it off once every month or two, it works for me.

also if you were parked on cement the spot on the ground could look worse than it really is, oil will spread into the pores of the concrete and make an oil spot look really big sometimes

Ah.....it was not a spot but a puddle. So far, so good.
