View Full Version : 1985 YOTA Pickup Ext. Cab build

I just picked up this 1985 yota Pickup Ex. Cab a few weeks ago, and im just getting started on the build for it. Its in pretty decent shape for what I payed for it. Its got a crappy 3" lift, 33x12.50x15 BFG Mud Terrains, homemade sliders, ARB front bumper, custom rear bumper, old All-Pro offroad t-case crossmember (I think), 4.88 gears, and some other crap. The only real problems with it are its carborated, and the rear wheel cylinders leak. Ive got all the parts to do a EFI swap on the way, and Ive got a wider IFS rear axle housing in decent shape sitting the the back of my 05 Taco right now for it. Cherookess are for homos. Other plans are 4.7 t-case gears, budbuilt t-case crossmember, rear spool, flat bed, and change out the suspension for something more flexable. Here are the pics from when I first brought it home, I already sold the ARB and rear bumper for parts.

Eric_N

I just bought the truck, havent even driven it yet really. Im ditching the t-case skid for a Budbuilt one b/c his are completely solid without all of those holes and places for crap to get caught. And the front bumper is gone, I liked it but it was to big and heavy for what im building this truck for.

Did some little things on the truck today. This isnt my truck in the pic, its my friends, but this is exactly how my truck looks. I put the turn signals in the same place and he gave me that black bumper for free, he now has a winch on the front of this truck.

Weve got alot more done on the truck now, the front axle was rebuilt and the rear was swapped out for a widder rear with bigger breaks. The interior was pulled and herculined and is waiting for the interior from a SR5 4runner to be swapped in. the engine/trans/tcase were also pulled to be replaced with the 4runners efi drivetrain

yea, i bet that pic does turn both of you on doesnt it?

Like Roverboy said, hopefully we will be getting the engine/trans/t-case in soon, with a Budbuilt single t-case crossmember. Next weekend we are putting on a drop front spring hanger, IFS steering box, Trail-Gear 3" front and rear springs, Ford F-250 shock towers up front with 14" travel Bilstein 5125's, new rear spring hangers and shackle hangers, and eventually a welded diff in the rear. Im picking up some 38x12.50.15 TSL SX's on Monday, trading them to a friend for some 36" TSLs if he wants the 38"s, or Ill just run the 38"s. Ive got spare birfs and hubs so Im good until I can afford some Longfield 30 spline axles.

Some updates.

Nick and I pulled the engine/trans/t-case out of the donner 85 4Runner and put them into the pickup to get the weight in the front end so we can set up the front spring hanger. And I threw on some 38x12.50x15 TSL SX's so we could roll it around. We should have the suspension/hi-steer done this weekend.

Here are some updates. Got the Trail-Gear 3" Front and Rear springs installed, with a Marlin front spring hanger and shackles. Also got the IFS Steering Box and Hi-Steer setup installed. We bobbed the bed 13 1/2" and installed a new rear crossmember with recovery points in place of a rear bumper. Last weekend I got a set of Marlin Crawler Total Spline 4.7 T-Case gears installed, and im waiting on my twin stick setup from Front Range Off-Road Fab to show up. Also I picked up my welded rear diff so that I can finally put the rear axles back in and the rear wheels back on. Look at Roverboys welds on my rear shackle mounts. Pretty.

I take no credit for any of the welding on this truck. My friend Mike and your beloved Nick did all of the welding for me.

Well I was able to get a little bit done on the truck today. I got the rear 3rd all set up with the welded carrier, reinstalled the hard brake lines on the rear axle, installed the new braided flex line, put the axles shafts back in, and put the tires on. Then I rolled it out of the garage so that I could clean up in there and get all the bondo dust out of it and off of the truck. Heres the lastest pic, I believe ive got a little trimming on the bed to do.

Thanks everyone. Ive still got a shit ton to do. Install gas tank, run the main fuel line, wire fuel pump/tails/turn/reverse, finish wiring behind dash and reinstall dash and the rest of interior, swap t-cases and t-case crossmembers, install and wire starter, install header, p/s pump/resivior/lines, radiator, hoses, belts, front and rear spring hangers, and make a square front drive shaft. And then I can drive it around the yard and wait for the front axle to go pop.

We took 13.5" out of the bed. Since we cant cut the best on a straight line the inside of the bed doesnt line up amazing, so I took some of the bed material that we cut off, and backed the insides of the bed with it, and then when we welded the sides together it backed it so we didnt burn through with the welder. For the floor I cut a strip out of the section we cut out and am just covering up the gap and screwing it down with some self tappers. My rear upper shock mount is gonna be coming through the bed b/c im running 14" travel Bilsteins so Ill be building a tire carrier that is angled off of the top of that, and my spare will cover up most of the inside of the bed where we cut. We just bondo'ed the sides after welding and I spray painted it black. The pictures make it look a lot better than it really does, but after the first time I bash the bed side against a rock, it wont matter.

Anywho,

The truck is now alive. The swap is all done, got a 20 gallon aluminum fuel cell from Summit mounted in the bed, front shocks are in, its pretty much wrapped up. I still need to make bump stops for the front, rear shock hoop and mount rear shocks, build front square driveshaft, and a few other little things, then it will be done. I dont have any pics right now of it moving, we dont have a working camera at the moment.

How does the taco do pulling it?
Surprisingly it doesnt do that bad. Before I took the bigger tires off it was kind of a turd but I towed to to my friends house about an hour away last saturday and it did very well. I picked up a weight distribution hitch yesterday so that I could pull the truck on forward and get the truck and trailer to sit level, and the brake controller is set up great as to where I can barely feel the trailer behind me when braking. I would love to get a desiel but I just cant justify the cost b/c I would have to drive it everyday and I will only be towing a few times a year.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o74/landrollover/Erics%20Pickup/IMGA0073.jpg

So we started by pulling the fuel cell and cutting the bed so that it can be pulled off around the shock mount

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o74/landrollover/Erics%20Pickup/IMGA0074.jpg

Then eric got the dent remover out

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o74/landrollover/Erics%20Pickup/IMGA0075.jpg

Eric wants to tube the rear and dovetail it with the bed sides, Lower the fuel cell and do someother tube work. I want to design a sweet tube bed with no skins on it. not sure whats going to happin yet but some tube is gona get slapped on this weekend.

All I can say is 40"s and Tons are in its future.

Stock 4, I have Trail-Gears version of ARPs in it now. They are holding strong, I bent the center link in it over the weekend. The axles are sold. Looks like I will be picking up a Front 60 and a rear 70 here shortly.

Rear 14B. Installed Frenched hangers in the front, and did the shackle tubes through the frame in the rear. It dropped the rear of the truck 3+". Thanks to Jordan for the Frenched hangers and Mike for the flux core goodness.

Thats the plan, but im worried about hydro ram placement vs. oil pan. I can always keep them apart with bumpstops, but I want some uptravel. I will be moving the front axle foreward though, so I will get a better idea once everything is mocked up.

This is more or less the plan. This is my friend Pete's 81 Toyota pickup with a 60 in the front. I know it doesnt look well protected, but when the center link is installed, it is protected very well with the skid plate. Ive seen him land on the center link and skid plate numerous times and it has never come close to the ram.

Its gone. Ive got an 87 Samuri now, with a full cage and 33's. Its like a go cart with an offroad suspension, and it will go places it shouldnt go.
