i thought that ZJ's used a CV joint instead of a u-joint assembly?

ZJ with the full time system used CV joints . Part time system used U joints .

Want to be cool ? Get some new CV shafts for a 94 ZJ , not rebuilt get new from Kingdom automotive out of canada . There stronger then U joints , can run on them even if you break one and the last set i bought were 65.00 per side from an Auto Value store .

Are they the 297 u-joints and will they fit in any D30?

Buy the new 760 joint , yes they are the larger joint . That goes by year not model as long as its not an old set . Not sure what year the changed to the larger joint .

99.5% sure

the 297x is no longer made. Spicer has replaced them with the 760x.

the 260x u-joint is the one you want to avoid.

My 95 ZJ had 260x from the factory. I bought a set of TJ shafts with the 297x shaft and they fit. Not sure how many ZJ's actually had the 297 joints tho'...possible later years than mine.

All of the ZJ shafts that I have pulled (about 75 pairs) have had the larger u-joints. I have yet to see a ZJ with the 260 shafts. As G-Man stated above, the 249 t-case ZJs used CV style shafts, but the 242 and 231 ZJs have all used the 297x u-joint. You will also have a anti-lock tone ring on the ZJ shafts, but it won't cause any interference issues in a non anti-lock axle.

I would advise to not do this. Sorry Marv. I'm not trying to be a prick but I dont believe they are stronger. I beat the snot out of my D30 u-joint shafts and never broke one. I ran 38s and 39s on them with 4.88 gears. 5.38s in my D44(TJ). The Barney has eaten 3 of the CV style shafts in half the time and in a smaller rig.

It could just be luck but you never know. Now the being able to drive on them broke part is a cool feature as is the price.
