I've only seen them on a sweet cj5, but what are the benefits and front or rear or both.

They let arched springs flatten out more before the shackle hits the rear crossmember in the rear and they change the leverage on the shackle to make it flex better.

Any point to putting them up front?

Well for my xj boomerang shackles give me some added clearance from some sheet metal on the body. With just the normal straight style and my leaf flattened out, the straight shackle did some metal forming.

Other than clearance not sure of other benefits. But here is a kewl pic of some custom made modified boomerang shackles:D

What tim said is right. I put them on the front, so they cleared my bumper, and I could get more flex. I did the same for the rear. They also do change the leverage on the spring, and allow it to flatten out easier giving more flex. I have had great luck with them

Plus mine are made out of 3/8 plate, with a crossmember, so I didnt have to worry about them breaking. I broke a stock one, and that is why I upgraded.

I still have a good amount more travel in the front end, and as you can see, with a standard shackle, I would be close to "bottoming out" on the front bumper. These are 5/8" lift, so I was able to gain a little extra lift here.

Are those 3/8?

I think Brent needs a new tape measure for Christmas.

Oh, and on a cj5 it really doesn't matter because those things can't flex anyway.

nah I dont think so. I look at it as they are never going to bend or break. I dont tighten the shackle bolts extremely tight, which puts a larger amount of horizontal pressure on those plates

No I surely dont need a new tape measure. Those are 3/8, I bought them, and know what they are.

yep

they help prevent shackle inversion and resulting broken main leaves.
