I used a scan tool and watch the cam timing numbers as you snap the throtle. You sould get that number as close to zero as you can. otherwize I don't really know.

You cannot set the timing, but you can set cam retard offset, as Gm would call it.
1. Warm engine to operating temperature.
2. Connect a scan tool with Rpm readings and cam offset readings.
3. Hold throttle at 1000 rpm with the throttle held steady, your cam retard offset should be zero.
Adjustments:
1. loosen the distributor hold down bolt just enough to be able to turn the distributor.
2. turn the distributor clockwise to compensate for a cam retard offset reading that is positive, and turn the distributor counter clockwise to compensate for a negative cam retard offset reading.
3. tighten the distributor hold down bolt.
4. Re-check the cam retard offset as described above. Repeat the procedure if necessary.

well the problem is there isnt a dist. in the engine. so it must be able to be set some how and i dont know how many times its been cranked w/out the dist. in there. plus i dont have a scan tool. im trying to help my pastor out w/ his truck he is building. unless there is a special procedure for just putting it in there. sounds like i might be in over my head rite now w/ out a scannner

put the #1 piston on compression stroke top dead center, drop the distributor in with the rotor pointing just before #1 terminal on the cap. when it drops in, it should be very close to or on #1 you may need a long screw driver to turn the oil pump slot for the distributor to drop in. If one is not avail, you can carefully turn the engine over by hand till the distributor fully seats. Then reset to compression, top dead center, and see if the rotor points to #1 terminal on the cap.
It may take you a few tries.

I'm a mechanic,by profession.
I'll second it being a bitch to do, but someone who has more time than money does what they have to do.
