View Full Version : A few things I can't seem to find about a D30

I've found the Axle that I want to use for my project, but I've got a few questions that the internet doesn't seem to want to give me.

Dana 30 axle from a '92-'99 Cherokee.

1st: The '92-'95 axles would need ABS for the u-joint size I would like. Is all the ABS junk in the carrier? or out in the rotors?

2nd: is the '96-'99 axles available without ABS?

3rd: How do I check for 3.73 gearing (like in a door tag or VIN or axle tag or something, in case the tag itself or the door is not there)

I don't have front ABS, so I'd like to avoid any and all extra issues/price involved with buying parts. I also don't want extra wires or anything looking like something should be there, I've done my "get 'er done" swaps, I want to make this one a little cleaner and more professional looking.

1. At the rotors
2. Yes
3. I have never seen an XJ with 3:73 gears

Alot of people swap the 297 U joint shafts to replace there 260's. I have seen YJ gears with 3:73's but never XJ's. Only 3:07's, 3:55's, and 4:10's. Make sure you find one without CAD

3. I have never seen an XJ with 3:73 gears, you would have to swap them in from a YJ D30

Why didn't you just come upstairs and ask???

Thanks! 3.73's is what I have now. I was just hoping to have them already set up. If I'm going to be putting in gears I might as well just buy new though.

didn't know if you guys would know or not.

The above is all true. + If you get an axle with the ABS on it, just dont connect it. My ABS on my yj d30 has been d/c'ed since I put in the 8.8.

If you end up getting one that needs some parts, pm me. I have quite a few extras laying around.

From what I read they discontinued the axle disconnects for all the XJ D30's for that time frame. But I'll keep my eye out.

You're right, the CAD ended in 91.

You won't find an XJ d30 with 3.73s, but there are many ZJ's(Grand Cherokees) and TJ's with 3.73s, I believe the ZJ d30 comes with CV style axle shafts, but 297x u-joint shaft swaps are simple.

MY 2000 xj has factory 3.73's

Not all ZJ's came with cv shafts...I believe only the V-8 Quadra tracs had cv shafts.
My 4.0L '95 came with ujointed shafts.

Are the ZJ ones the same width as the XJ's? And also non disconnect + Drivers drop?

I've only been looking at XJ ones because I knew that they were about the right width already.

ZJ D30's are low pinion, Drivers drop, same width as an XJ

xj/tj/yj/zj are all the same width, just different mounting points, and pinions high/depth diff.

Only all Wheel drive ZJ's got the CV's. TJ,ZJ, XJ front axles are all 100% inner changeable. And no not all Xj's till'91 had the cad, I had a '89 that didn't have it...

ORLY?

That'd be a new one to me. My 2000 XJ was 3.55s, just like both of my 98 XJs.

Had them in both of my TJs (97 and 98), 3.73s were standard with 2.5 autos and option with 4.0 sticks.

ZJ 4.0s also had 3.55 gears, but the V8s had 3.73s...

XJs had 3.55s or 4.10s, as mentioned.

Kinda wrong...V-8's had 3.55 also. 3.73 came with either 4.0L or V8 if you had trailer/tow package. My 4.0L came stock with 3.73. Marvs V-8 had 3.55 stock, iirc

Does the '92-'95 axles have the larger u-joint for other models too? *edit: With ABS
