So here is my intro/build thread. I grew up in Kent city up in north kent county and it looks like I may be moving back there after I exit the Marine Corps in June 2012. But enough about me.
I got this 69 bronco about 4 years ago, it had a crate 302, dana 30 front, 9in rear, ghetto ass 5.5 inch lift with those god awful radius arm drop brackets and a set of 33's. This is how it looked when I got it, it didn't stay that way for long. I'll try to post some more of my rigs progression through time when I can.

Now I have a 74 that I drove in High school and had a very basic knowledge of automotive workings but I had no Idea what I was in for, like death wobble.
It quickly became clear to me that everything on this poor rig had been completely half ass'd. this is where the work set it.

the first thing i did was replace the rear springs with some Wild horses 5.5 lift 11 pack rears

Then I put on some badly worn boggers and cut the fenders. Those boggers made me hate my life, I also added power steering with my own 4x4x 2 box build.

Later on I scored a 76 dana 44 off San diego craigslist for just 300 bucks  I tossed in some wild horses 5.5 progressive coils up front with west coast broncos radius arms and tossed on some 37"s

Scary as hell, previous owners can leave the nicest of gifts to be discovered... like obliterated track bar bushings.

and yeah, blown out bushings will always make for a scary ride.

Got a few more pics, right now she is all torn apart getting 4.88 gears with an aussie locker front 31 spline detroit rear and working new shock hoops as well as rock sliders. She also got some 3/4" hiems and .250 dom for new steering, getting this crap in Hawaii is a real pain...

Yeah no doubt, also lengthened the trac bar when I did the axle swap.

Edit: also forgot, I swapped in an Np435 and full on msd ignition to liven up the 302, I have a nice little mill to replace the 302 with though

The thought of a dove tailed front and rear with full width axle rig is mighty tempting, but I am going to save that dream for my tube buggy in the future. That one will have early bronco skins for sure as well.

I'd put some wheel spacers on it other than that looks great!

Funny you mention that I just threw some 2" ones up front! I have 5 H1 rims that I got though so my new tire combo will have 3.5' backspacing when I re-center them. I'll run some 37x12.50R16.5 goodyear cheapos that we run on the HMMWV's unless I can get my paws on some better rubber from the motor pool. Those tires and rims on there now are going to be for sale after I complete the 2 piece rims.

Br0nc0xrapt0r
03-29-2011, 02:26 PM
Edit: I won't be re-centering the rims in Hawaii though, the centers are 3/8" pressed steel, I don't want to know what it would cost to ship those...

You have or had a 69? You have a 74, which is being restored? I is confused, regardless, bada$$. I just about completed a 74 for a trail rig. Looking forward to more pics.

hey dude whats up, I have both. The 74 was the high school bronco that needs a tub. It is in pieces at dads house up der on 19 mile. The 69 is the one I have been building and will bring back home with me. I leave for afghan in a couple weeks and I hope to get all the guts in the axles replaced and the new motor ready to go in. I think I posted this rig on classic and Pirate in the ford section.

But I digress, If Raytheon or one of them fancy companies hires me I may not be moving back but I will be making periodic trips to build the 74.

So I got rid of the hard top and went with an STC/Kaline soft top. I have the front bumper off, I had to strip it of rust, a daily task here in Hawaii.

Soooooo.... what color for the bumpers? I was going white, wife says I'm dumb and that they need to be black.

I'm not sure what Island he was on, he retired from the Military and moved back to Pennsylvania a little while back.

Ah I see said the blind man, Well he would have been on Oahu then that's where all us military bubas hangout. At anyrate I have been here for 2 years but only physically been on the Island for 6 months or so collectively.

Today was productive to say the least, I managed to replace every wear Item on the front except the Ujoints and spindle bearings. The gear setup went well and I was able to get the tooth pattern pretty dialed in with my setup bearings. Conveniently as soon as I got that done Fungus was able to lend a hand and we pressed on the new bearings and made some final adjustments which netted us a final back lash of .085, I even topped it all off with some nice new warn premiums. I was mortified by how nasty the axle was on the inside. The gear oil was a nice milk shake color :fp:. I also got some fancy shmancy new steering links from ballistic. Tomorrow I'll mock up the shock mounts and cut the rockers off.

PSSSHHHHH 7/8 of course, yeah yeah yeah it's a 60 or nuthin right? well this one is a bronco and thus it shall stay. If I really start messing things up in there I will make a 609 for it. But I doubt it will go that far, I plan to make a buggy with bronco skins and a 300 on pane 435 np205 with tons.

Yeah I looked into building a 609 or 449, way cool but I think if I throw in RCV shafts and keep Tue rubber smaller than 38 or 39 I should be fine.

Ok I have it all cleaned up and painted, it looks really nice I'll add pics later. To sum it all up I was able to do a complete rebuild on the front axle including gears and a locker. The steering links were replaced, way overdue. The shock mounts got re-worked and the body had some fat trimmed off it. I wanted to get the detroit in the rear pretty bad with nice new gears and shafts but it wasn't in the cards. Just as always I ran out of time and I have to go now. Big thanks to john for all the help and tools to get so much done in such little time. Plans for right now are to put some stabilizer in the tank and hook up the battery tender. I will be leaving for Afghanistan tomorrow. There is a silver lining however, as soon as I get back there will be a nice big shiny pile of parts ready and waiting and I will go head first into the 95 cobra motor install. Thanks for all the kind words in the thread, I will try to check in from around the globe when I can.
