Looks like a Chrysler 825. If I remember correctly the 725 has the top three bolts in a straight line and the 925 has 12 bolts. So it would be the in-between one.

X2 on the 9.25 and it's kinda hexagonal.

but besides that, i think that the 8.25 had two different spline counts available, either a 27 or 29 count.....i am researching

It's the same rear that's in a lot of Cherokees. I don't know about the axle shaft spline count though.

Is there any way to tell without pulling the cover?

Don't know about Dakota's but... 91-96 XJ's have 27 spline axles & 97-01 XJ's have 29 spline axles

EDIT with new information!
YMMV so don't take this as gold but... after some quick searching, it would appear that dakota 8.25's changed spline count at the same time as XJ's, starting in the 97 model year.

Not 100% sure yet...but you most likely have a 29spline unit like the 97 later Cherokees. I'll keep searching tho'.

edit....seems I've found the same thing out that sodapop entered above. sorry didn't read all his post.
