it depends on how much you want to take off.
an afternoon with a sawzall can get you an inch of clearance by taking off the huge lower lip.

I have heard that 13 bolts always leak. I remember seeing one where a guy added a 14th bolt again after the shave. I'll do some searching.

I'm thinking about asking the local machine shop to put it in a mill and get rid of the huge lip...
Or I'll get a sawzall and a case of beer
Circular saw with a metal Blade works good :thumb:

I hit it with the sawzall and added some new plate. I have no leaks.
After I was done, housing is up side down.

No i have to buy a sawzall
I used a 6" cut-off wheel on my 4.5 grinder. I don't use the guard and a bigger wheel helps me keep it straight. I took off about 1.75 inches and mine leaks. But I believe it has more to do with the homemade diff cover that I didn't have milled back flat after welding.

I thought about the home made cover route, but decided on the Ruff stuff cover that was already assmebled and welded before delivery.

Shouldn't this be in the dakota build thread? I mean it's a bunch of talk and nothing really getting done. Hell he doesn't even own a sawzall.

i dont reccomend going thru all the work of cutting and plating. just use a circular saw with a metal blade or a grinder with cutoff wheel and cut off the lip. then you dont have to worry about getting a new cover made or leaking. i went the route of shaving alot off and plating it. then had to drill and tap a few new holes since i ridded 3 of the stock ones. but then had to make a new cover because even the aftermarket ones will not work with a shaved housing without some fabwork. would i do all that again. NOPE. id spend 30 min with a saw and shave the lip. then move on with my life. but if you want to do it the hard way heres some pics of how i did mine.

Beefy, if you haven't done this yet, borrow a port a band from someone. i loaned mine to my buddy when he cut his 14 bolt, said it cut like butter.

Did you do this shave yet ?? Was thinking of doing a 14 bolt shave myself but can't wait to see how yours turned out. So ordered shave kit from Ballistic fab. looks like a good set up.
What do you think?

Holy shit! Is 270 bucks worth the 1.25 inches of clearance?

run a sterling 10.25. they have that much clearance without the need to shave them.

just saying to those who don't have the axle yet, the 10.25 is a good option.

I thought there was problems with getting gears and lockers for the 10.5

I thought it was a little pricey but it looked like a good set up. It says it will give you 2" of extra clearance. Had the 14 bolt axle for 2 years now & decided to build it.

from what i have seen looking around, gears and lockers are a little more $$$$ for the 10.25 over the 14bolt. if you factor in the shave kit for the 14 bolt you can come out ahead with the 10.25, as long as you paid the same for the axles.
but you can find a 10.25 reasonably cheap cause not many people want them.
another thing is that the hubs on the 10.25 stick out a lot farther than the SRW 14bolt hubs do, meaning they may get bashed up on the rocks.

So instead of shaving the dif you have to shave the hubs.

or just run the hubs as is. the wheel/tire combo should protect them enough. :D
or you can use a 10.5, which has shorter hubs, redrill the hubs to get rid of the metric pattern and run that. :thumb:
