do any of you have experience with smittybilt winches? I think I might as well get the winch when I get the rock bumper, just to make it easier on me. and it will look even more B.A. when I am done. money is a bit slim considering jeep wj bumpers are about 850 a pop, but I found a brand new xrc10 for 500 and was considering it.:ben:

They suck balls...
I have one.
It sucks balls
I hate it and want to light it on fire.
That said it did save my ass last weekend but, it's the second one i've had in a year the first one had 8 pulls on it none of them hard and it died. Lots of internal issues with it.

You still don't like yours Beef? I know you had issues with the one, but I thought the replacement was okay. That is the same one going on the cj.

It's really not that bad the new one works but not a lot of power I stalled it 3 times so far...
It's not broke yet...... When I do the next upgrades I'll be buying a warn M8000. If the shitybuilt still works it will be mounted on my trailer.

whats the weight of your rig Beef? if I think 8k will do the job I can run to coldwater next week, and pick 1 up.

My rig weighs 4,700 and an 8,000 lb smitty built pulled it up a rock wall on Drummond island twice no problems.
My next one will be a #10,000 lb warn or superwinch just for added strength. Because mine is a bit larger than most of the rigs on the trail.
In my opinion an 8,000 is plenty for a jeep.
I don't want you to think I'm bashing you for looking at the smitty built I'm just trying to save you the headache of spending $500 on something that will only last 1 year

The SuperWinch EPi9.0 got killer reviews with real world line speed, pulling power and features on par with the Warn. Additionally, if you are going to use wire rope instead of synthetic, the superwinch (and maybe the warn too) has a set screw type anchor to the drum, so if you break a cable you can repair it quite easily in the field.
This is the one I plan on going with...

You can get a brand new Warm M8000 for just over 500. Also, I have a Harbor Freight winch, and it has never let me down and it has lots of hard pulls on it. I'm very happy with it.

My Warn xd9000i has the wire rope attached to the drum with a crimped on electrical ring terminal. Yes, of course I've already broke it once.

well if Beef is weighing in at 4700 and i am 4500 the 8k warn should be good. for the record I will never run synthetic cord on my winch. my cousin is a sgt in old ironsides ( armored division 1 US Army) and they tested those cords and these are his units words "100% ass" "never" " crap is shiny" "broke when I farted on it" and my favorite " I won't risk my samurais life on a fake cable" ( he cares about a samurai ) ha it made me laugh.

Interesting since a true synthetic rope was developed for the commercial fishing industry. I've been running synthetic for 6 or 7 years and done plenty of heavy winching. I love it and have no intention of going back to cable. That said, I broke 5/16 early on and went to 3/8. Never had a problem. I consider winching heavy military equipment a lot different than offroading. They have the occasional big rig that needs to be winched. We winch time after time where the light weight really pays off with handling.
To each his own but I don't consider what they do in the military a good example of how offroaders do things.
