So I'm considering getting one...
What would you say lock the front of my kota or the rear?
Its a 1997 Dakota Sport with 3" body lift and 2.5" suspension lift running 33x12.5x15 BFG Mud's

And keep in mind that this is my daily driver please.

8.25 rear end?

27 or 29 spline?

27 or 29 spline?
I think the XJ was the only vehicle that had the 29 spline 8.25".
I also think that there is a Lock Right for the 27 spline 8.25".

for a dd and to stay cheap, i would lock the rear
and use a lunch box locker like an aussy, or the cheaper detriot

or spend that 300$ on a beater car, like a ford festiva for your dd.
then weld the rearof the dakota, swop in a 44 front and lock it.

just think of how bad ass you could make your truck with all the gas money you wont be spending driving a tiny little car

I believe your truck has a 8.25 in the front also not a 44 I know the gen 2's did. I wouldn't would probably try and get an OX for the rear and forget about the front until it has a solid axle. Limited slips and lockers will make it handle worse in the winter(at least my truck sure did) and wear tires faster thats why I would get a selectable one.

So my front end is also a 8.25? Yea i wasn't really thinking about locking the front just the back, I prolly cant do the selectable locker.. Kinda strapped for cash at the moment. Any sudgestion for what to look for when looking for one considering I have NEVER bought one. Like what do I ask for? I know I have a 8.25 rear end but what else do i look for? Does it matter what gears i have?

My set up rocks for me

OX in front and detroit in rear......I don't mind the locker in the rear for my DD but a detroit or such in the front would really suck in the winter in a DD.

OX is expensive though....and alot of people have problems.

I would also look into beefing up your trasfercase (bigger chain and such) i replaced 3 transfer cases on my buddies dakota on 33's with a lsd in the rear. the chain stretched in everyone and blew a hold in the case. he also killed a transmission.

I got an Aussie for my front for Christmas.
Apparently they dont make one for a Dakota.

both front and rear or just rear???

just the rear he had.

having one in the front of a stock TJ axle would make it always on and making it pretty much impossible to drive past 35 or 40 i would say without dying. if you run lockouts (like i did) you can run a detroit up front and still DD it. i put 60,000 miles on mine with a detroit up front but because of the lockouts it wasnt engaged. lockout conversions for stock TJ axles are expensive though.

that is not true for a lunch box locker black jack
ever wonder why with a lunch box you can coast around corners and not have tire chirp but if you go around a corner on the throttel the tires will chirp?

many ratcheting lockers such as ausie require aposing forces to engage them. meaning resistance from the ground and power through the drive line engage the locker.
sooo if you have a lunch box locker in the front of a stock tj and the transfer is in 2wd you should have no problems because there is no drive line force. you may hear it ratchet around corners but no tire chirp.

detroits and other full carier non ratcheting lockers on the other hand are a totaly difrent creature and yes would to the best of my knoledge require lock out hubs for dd use

Detroit in the rear, i forget if the Dakotas have a electric actuator on the front ifs, but if they do something like a Aussie.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I had a Detroit in the rear of mine when it was a DD. No problems. The Aussie was just as good in the for the front. When in 2wd you didn't even know you were locked.

You will be very happy with those 2 units.

Is an Aussie some type of a air or selectable locker?

I'm pretty much sold on some type of ratchet locker for the rear, just gotta find a good deal on one now.

You need to indentify which rear end you have. If you just going to do the rear stick with the full detroit locker. Your aslo going to want to get a master install kit which includes bearings, shims, seals, gear marking compound, and other items to refurbush your axle. You need to know what gears you have so they can get you the right carrier.

I cant find any for the 8.25 though. theres some for the 8.375, 8.75 and 9.25 rear axles
