My jeep is shaking like crazy when the clutch is engaged. I've had problems for awhile now with 2nd and reverse when it is cold.

Question is:

Is there a good upgrade I should be looking for?

when its cold fluid is really thick its like molasses in the trans. probably the troubles on why its hard to get into those gears. not sure why its shaking but it could be farther down the line.

Might be time for a clutch. Go with a center force clutch

centerfrce is nice
but make sure you get a pilot berring with it cuz thats what is mostlikely giving you hell

2nd and reverse issues.
I'm guessing you have an ax-15 manual trans.

Sounds like it's time for new synchronizers...

The shaking is more likely the throwout bearing Vs th pilot bearing.

Tip: shove bread(or heavy grease, but bread is less messy) in the pilot bearing hole. using a wooden dowel that fits snug in the pilot bearing tap the dowel in mashing the bread in. add more bread as the bushing/bearing pushes out. Cheap, and no special tools needed:thumbsup:

that is a good trick tonka, force the bread in behind the baering to push it out

if it turns out to be syncros throw a clutch and piloet bearings in there also while its out.

she has a 2" body lift. i wonder if the floor board is causing the problems getting into second and reverse?

it is very possible.

with 2" of body lift it's also very easy to look up and check:hehe:

Might be. I had to cut my floor when I did the body lift on the old Jeep.

My rubber boot gave me trouble shifting into second.

No boot on mine :hehe:

the problems with reverse just started, well after the body lift

second was always tough when it was cold but now is damned near impossible.

I'll try the bread trick first. If I have to do the clutch, I'll have to have it done because Ray doesn't think he can handle the weight of the tranny right now.
What am I looking at cost wise?

Is it grinding going into gear or really hard to push into gear?

Was just hard going into second and now second grinds and reverse is just hard.

does it go into reverse easyer if you let the clutch out a little as you pull it into gear?

Rover

Tim says if you are going to do it do it right from the fly wheel pressure plate clutch release bearing clutch disk and pilot bearing. And he says by the way the bread thing won't work get the puller and pull it out. It is a pain in the butt....

I've heard that a Luk premium (gold?) is as good/better than a Centerforce and that Centerforce isn't good for unmodded powertrains.

Anybody have any "hands on" Centerforce experience?

I've used bread for my TJ, YJ, MJ, on a f-350 super duty dump truck, among other vehicles...

Yes, and I'd say O.E. Replacement is just fine for most jeeps.

Yes, I have used both. I like the LUK Gold much better than the Centerforce. I had a Centerforce last 2 years. The LUK has taken a boat load of abuse so far. My engine is mostly stock (air and exhaust upgrades), 4.11s turning 33s.

Okay, here's the deal....Ray took a ride in my jeep and he said before he tackles the clutch, he is replacing the cap, wires, rotor and plugs....just to make sure. He said there was water under the cap. He said he thinks it's clutch anyway....but......

So I am probably looking to install a clutch. You all seem to agree on the centerforce. Where do I get it?

More importantly.....who would like to come and help??? Ray's only worry is the weight of the tranny. He worries about his back. I am open to dates. We can make it a wrench fest if anyone else has anything needing doing. Our garage is heated (two stalls) and Ray has all his tools still and most of the assorted toys necessary. Not to mention the beer......
