Heres the deal , when the GMC is done it will be to tall to fit in my enclosed trailer thats the problem .
Solution : Build the rear leaf pack about 2" lower then i need . Put air shocks on the back . I can pull out of the trailer and hit them with air for the last 2" of lift i need .
Truck could wheel with out them if i blew a air shock out , it would just be low in the back end . No lines on the shocks , air them direct to avoid broken air lines .
With no air lines they will work independent , will this limit travel on the back end ? put them into 1 line then the bleed back and forth but you risk breaking air lines .
Thoughs please ? Seems like a teribble simple solution , what am i over looking .

i wouldnt go air shoks as the rid would suck using them for lift
i would go air bags, and bracket them inbetween the frame and the springs
i have a set that would be prfect for this
they will provid lift without compromising ride quality

Ok air shocks ride harsh ? never used them before . Air bags i put on my chevy pickup actual improved the ride but i take it air shocks kill the ride ?

How would the air bags work with suspension flex? Without ever seeing them used in person, I would be concerned that they could possibily limit travel of the springs. Ex. if the bags are all the way extended, and the springs have more room to flex.
From what I have read about air shocks, I have heard that they can be stiff, and also heat up if you drive them on the road much, due to something with the oil in there not being circulated?:wtf:. This causes the shock to lose pressure over time, and decreases the life of the shock. I know you probably wont drive it on the road much, but something to consider. Not 100% sure, but this is what I have read, so I would research it some.
I would also be concerned with the spring pack itself limiting the flex ability of the shock. If you are raising the entire leaf pack ~2" then the pack would acquire more arch, which generally would mean a stiffer ride, especially sense the air shock is have to actually "hold" the vehicle up. I would think that downtravel could be an issue.
:wave4:Honestly, if this was me, I would consider a rear limiting winch setup, something like the buggy guys use, except that you would not be using it for the same purpose. This would allow you to retain the standard suspension setup, without messing with air shocks, or air at all. I would find an inexpensive like 2000 pound winch, mount it underneath the Jimmy, and make a mount to the axle. When you want to pull it on the trailer, attach the line from the winch to the axle, have a switch in cab, and lower the rear of the vehicle, by powering the winch in. There will be no shock loading on this winch, so an inexpensive 2000 pound winch should be plenty strong. When you done trailering, back the vehicle out, and release the winch. It will be at standard height. This would be easier than air shocks, and cheaper as well. Just a thought...

I guess that would work too....but I wouldnt want to have to get under there everytime and try to attach that to ratchet the vehicle down either. Plus its got the bling factor:hehe:

Well now thats lots of help , damn XJ people any way :fryingpan:
TY , you are thinking . When i read Drummonds post i thought the same thing , a ratchet strap duh .
Theres a rock guard on the axle now and a D ring on the bumper . It wouldnt take 2 minutes to pull the back down a bit .

Can be done but its a lot more work then the ratchet strap . Plus i dont all ways take the enclosed so it is only on ocasion ill need to do this . Soft rate springs so it wont take much to pull it down a couple inches .
I was over thinking this :banghead:

just go from the bumper to a trailer tie down. less work.
you should see me tie down my trailer............:hehe::hehe::hehe:

I think the problem is actually getting it in the door, and then he can strap it down

It has to be lowered to get in the trailer , its an enclosed unit . but with the rock guard on the diff thats not biggy .

You have a winch, maybe run the cable under the front to the back bump/via the rear axle and make it squat during storage?
