Got this so far. Still gonna do something else. I think i'll do diagonals on the large blocks.

ive done this about once a year for the past five years
just a couple of tips to make it easier
its easer to have it on an axle with the wheel just off the ground so you can roll the tire but still have it be stable for cutting
next is to have a case of beer
it takes along time to cut 4 tires
you might as well be drunk

Good tip Sglide I will remember that one. The only problem I see is Im not sure a case of beer for 4 tires is enough...:hehe::hehe:

Heck, Mike took a circular saw to his AT's and they worked great.
I picked up a...umm...less expensive groover off ebay.:hehe:
Works great though. Really didn't take long to do those grooves on that tire.
I'm going to same all the cuttings and then see how much weight I shave off them.

I dont think I would be daring enough to try it with a circular saw. Maybe a die grinder with a cut off disc on it??? Whats a less expensive groover??
Also thanks for all the info this could be a great write up for sure:thumbsup:

thats the same one i have tim, exept i have almost all the blades and hot irons to 3/4"
on 3/4 you have to really give it time between cuts to let it reheat, and by the time you do 4 tires your a bit sore
but its been used by half the town for many years and it holds up great

Tea, they are XTerrains. I don't know why I am doing this...these tires have never left me wanting more traction. Well, maybe a little lateral traction.
Actually it's the hard pack snow that they could be a little better on.

My old XTerrains were cut like yous second pics just from inner to outer. Other than damp grass they'd grab on every thing, oh other prob was they seemed to hydro-plane real baddly... But great off road

I'm not sure they were cut when I got them, plus ran in reverse direction. So I don't know if it was the tires of the fact they were on 10" wide wheels. Just basicly pointing out my exsperance with the tires.. Other than the Hydro-plane issues I love the tires..
MuddyPaws 3.0

I have never experienced any hydroplaning issues with these tires in stock form. I think they would hydroplane from running them in reverse though based on how they channel water and the large block in the center.

In nasty mud, they don't seem to clear very well. (watching others, I have never ran them) Do you think that this way of grooving would alleviate that as well?

here's how I grooved my boggers which are similar to the xterrains.
I've been really please. The only thing I would do different is to make the cuts wider to help even more with lateral stability. They do pretty good as is though.
Edit: Oh and I was really surprised how much weight it ended up being. We did my 2 boggers (35's) and then junk90xj's 2 (33's) and it was quite a bit. We didn't actually put it on a scale but I wouldn't have been surprised if it was more than 8-10 pounds.

I agree! I wouldn't run uncut boggers unless they were mud drag only tires.
They still slip sideways but I think using a wider blade would fix that considerably more.

Holy crap...I HATED my boggers. They were, like you said, great for the drags but they were worthless on the trail.

I've been VERY impressed with them on the trail - maybe it's the grooves....
I think it all depends, realistically all I can compare them too is my old 33" BFG M/T's which did okay but lost their beads too much. I don't think I would like the boggers on the front though.
My only complaints about the boggers are they are WAY stiff so you have to air them way down and they're still pretty stiff.

I also have that ideal knife. I found that I can go faster with it if I do cust that are shallow, only about 1/4" deep. I can do two passes to get 1/2" deep without getting the blade too cold.
I know on my SXs, it make a really big difference in both grip and carcass flexibility.
On tip: If you run out of blades, take a regular razor blade(trapeziodal kind from a utility knife). Use a cut off wheel and slice a 1/8" wide strip with the actual cutting edge. Then heat it red hot and bend it into the size of cutter you want. It will be much stronger than the blades that come with the knife.

another tip: make sure the tire is really clean, hose it down, wipe it down.......
it takes very little sand to dull the blades

Funny what you come up with when you bust your last blade the night before your trip...
I've found having the 500 watt halogen light positioned 1" from the tire as a preheater always helps. Well, I always seem to be grooving tires in the winter in an unheated garage, so the heat helps. I bet doing it in the summer in the sun would be better.

Never really had any issues on the trail but I am wondering how much better they are in the hard pack snow and how much better the tread area flexes when aired down.
The tires are great off road...better than almost any swamper I have had and I have had just about all of them except the mall crawling Iroks.

Yea, I really do like them that much. I have never had any issues with traction in mud...forward or reverse. Maybe because I had the power to spin them. Hard pack snow....well....I haven't had a mud tire yet that was worth a damn on hard pack.
I thought about doing the edges, and am still thinking about it, but there is quite a bit of rock rash out there and I think it may weaken the outer lugs too much and they may pull off. Not sure though.
