Lets say some one has a Grand Cherokee with a v-8 auto trans and fulltime 4 wheel drive. So it has fulltime/awd and 4 low.
3 questions. 1....how good is that transfer case being full time? I am assuming it goes into and out of 4 wheel drive automatically as needed.
2....could you put lockers in?
3....for a trail rig, did they all come like that or could you put a different transfer case in. I mean so you could go into and out of 4 X 4 hi/low at your own convienence such as with a XJ, YJ,TJ ect.
Will probably have more questions to follow.
Thanks

That is a NP 249 T case , it has a viscous coupler . Think of a limited slip t case .
I have ran them with lockers and your ok , depending on its condition you can run maybe 31 to 32 " tire , any larger and the limited slips becomes neutral .
I think there is a 242 that fits that trans , 45 re trans i think you have . There a 727 with an over drive stuck on them .
You can also pull the input out of the 249 and put it in a NP 231 and your good to go .

If you are looking to have a trail rig, I would switch it out to a Manual T-case.

Yah, thats what we were thinking of doing. I would like to have the say so weather I'm in 4 wheel or not. Not something that goes in and out at its own will. thats why I asked the questions.
But, is there a transfer case that will bolt right in or is there a bunch of crap you have to do?
Oh wait,
Marv you say that a 242 may fit. And what do you mean when you said the limited slip becomes neutral?
That it's like having an open diff?
Oh, and by the way, that computer worked out great. Thanks.

The front will just stop driving all together if you get to large of tire on it .
The 4x4 does not go in and out on a 249 , its in all the time . problem i had was finding a T case that would go in deep enough to hit the seal in the trans . Right spline count was easy to find .
You need to do more research , i dont have all the answer on it . Id look into the NP 242 as i think they came in the grand as an option .

I looked into this a bit for you , the np 242 is a bolt in swap . You will have to shorten the rear drive shaft though 1.5 " after the swap .
