Well i really want a cage for piece of mind. Being that it is a tin can cherokee i was thinking of using HREW in either 1.5" or 1.75" x .120" wall since i do have a top to add a bit of additional support... kinda. My main reason for using HREW is to save money. Also unlike an open top rig once i roll it there will be a lot of body damage that would most likely get chopped off. So i'm thinking that instead of like a normal cage that is built to take several rolls this one would just need to survive one or a bad weekend.
What are your thoughts

as long as the cage is designed right, there wouldn't be an issue with HREW.
you have to remember that the jeep isn't being built to survive a 200mph crash. just needs to protect in case you tip over.

Use it. Just remember to put the seam to the inside of your bends. It is fine to use aslong as you do it right. I would not hesitate to use it in a lighter vehicle. Just make sure to use .120 wall. Gusset and be happy.

I've down a fair amount of research on cage design. I'm thinking of a modified halo style. I want it to be real solid over myself and passenger(s) still need to decide how long i am keeping the rear seat.

Yep. If you are worried about strength, there's a big strength increase in 1.75 over 1.5. (about 60% increase in moment of inertia)

Kyle, you already know my answer. An upside down free fall will test the strength of any material.
Please do not skimp on such an important item.
Not to mention, would your design help tie the Uni-Body together ? Pretty sure we talked about how you have the thing tied together underneath now. but when you end up cutting off the top structure, would a cage help to strengthen the topside ?
Just a thought-Maybe 2 inch HREW ? in the loop around the windshield at least
Not sure how it is priced compared to DOM.

Last i checked HREW is about half. I would run a roll bar hoop behind the front seats with a 3/4 halo coming off to the front over the driver and passenger. also one over the rear seat for now. the roll bar will get a cross bar for the 5 or 4 point harness mounts and some triangulation and gussets. front support bars will run down the pillars and a cross bar over the dash, most likely a small bar in the center of the windshield. this would all get tied into the unirails.
I'll get some sort of pic up in a sec

i only use dom i have seen to many hrew cages bend and kink way to easy then you have to rebuild it. in customers rigs a cage is only made out of dom i will not build a cage with out it..... but like you said it will be good enough for one good roll if its designed right!

I'm with you on DOM and customers rigs. I would not want any possibility of failure. And if i have a roll that manages to damage the cage then its time to scrap the uni body and build a buggy. There is no point in keeping an xj if you can tweak a cage that bad.
