Went out duck hunting on Sun, had to brake through the ice to get out to our spot (1 -2 inches thick) finally got to open water though.
Had a great hunt shot 4 mallards, 1 gadwall, and 2 geese, and both geese were banded and shot out of the same flock, I shot one and my buddy shot the other. It was the 1st bands for both of us so that was purdy sweet. On top of the fact that Shooter made about a 110yrd retreive on the goose I shot. The bird was still alive and swiming away from him thats waht made it even better.

heres some pictures

Geese that have been caught and a band put on their leg and then released. Usually when they are babies. When shot, you report the info and the number on the band for research.

Duck hunting sucks D but it looks like you had a great time! :hehe:

you report it to the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory. There is no requirement that you do it, but if you do, you get a certificate of appreciation that tells when, where, and who banded the bird. It helps with management research.

You get to keep the band and most hinters put the band on their call lanyard. My father in law is a bit water fowl hunter and has prolly 20 bands from ducks and geese.

I have never shot a woodcock or grouse with a band but they are banded.

Thanks for the explanation there MP. It is a pretty big deal in the waterfowl community ( a bit of a trophy per say)
