Is there any way you could turn the tank around to protect that drain/petcock a little better? It would suck to have that thing ripped off. Otherwise looks good.

BIGBEN
11-24-2008, 10:26 PM
to hit that petcock something would have to come up between the control arm and the driveshaft. something else will probably get broken before the petcock is hit. if the tank were turned the other way the petcock would be about the same level as the bottom of the frame. much easier to damage.

Mongo

If it becomes an issue just remove petcock and install a plug.

I think it might just be the picture.

I managaed to dent the floor(yes, the floor) in my truck in roughly the same spot as that tank. I got extremely hung up, destroyed the complete exhaust system, even the header, and bent a frame crossmember. But I cant drive.

I need to merge some threads into this one :D

My next plan for Max (until the one tons this spring) is to paint him in the garage. Once I get him home from Chop I have to clean all the mud outta the frame that Chop stuffed in there

Then, the plan is to paint him Satin Black with Gloss Black skulls and Glow in the dark skulls stenciled on. I think I might do the entire undercarriage in red.

Finally was able to get ahold of all the supplies I think I'll need for this paint job.

Didn't think the excursion was going to start this morning  Had the hardest time finding 1000 and 2000 sandpaper, but got them finally. Living in a small town sucks when you need supplies.

I'm starting tonight on one of the doors to see if I can do bondo work and if I like the effect of the paint..hoping it is truly self leveling. If all else fails...I'll rattlecan it.

That is, if the garage will heat up to 70...otherwise, tomorrow is another day :hehe:

Evil Queen

Not quite sure who I'm more pissed at right now, Kfab, Ray or Torx :pissed:

I've got the torx for the door hinges soaking in pb blaster overnight. If i can't get them off, I'll have to sand and paint the doors with the hardware still on them. That will definitely be more difficult and look like crap. Thanks to Kfab, I'll have to do a little sheet metal work to boot.

Here is the body where the stupid tire carrier from hell kept hitting

I don't think that had anything to do with the tire carrier. That is a common place for them to rust. Look at any TJ, and they always get a rust hole right there. The other side of the tailgate doesn't rust near as bad for some reason.

Well, I have some updates after a weekend with Ben. Decided not to put fender flares back on. I will need to sawzall the openings a bit more evenly. Ben welded a patch on the back for me, it'll be covered with corner guards anyway, but it won't be a gaping wound behind there. He also showed me how to use a grinder for evening out and cutting off bolts. Our welder sucks, but it was better than nothing. All in all, just had a great time with a good friend.

First had to get my axles out of the way

Lookin good Pam, Are you loving the paint fumes?

Evil Queen
03-02-2011, 12:30 AM
haha. Thank you Bryan. I couldn't do the spray paint because of my breathing. I wear a full mask when I sand even. I actually looked up a method of painting using a roller...makes me feel like a redneck but it works. Best part is the paint is low fumes, doesn't require a mask and isn't flammable, so I don't have to open the garage door.

And the results so far are better than the satin black cars in the basement of the Autorama!!!

Love the paint on the door... Looking Great!!!

I almost came to your side of the bridge for the paint....the method called for Tremclad, something we "yanks" don't have here. They do, however, also make Rustoleum and I was told that is a pretty fair substitute for the Tremclad.

BigBird
03-02-2011, 01:35 PM
tremclad is the "Shit" for painting steel... Paint over the rust... and it's all good...

Can't wait for Drummond... Gotta get my shit together!

Evil Queen

I've been talking to a few of you about how I'm painting max....with a roller :D

I have lung problems and really worried about spray painting that much...I found this link and decided to try it on just one of the doors....it came out great! I had to modify a couple things...we can't get Tremclad on this side of the bridge, but Rustoleum is working fine. The other thing was a final sanding ....had to bypass this because of the satin finish

Just put the second coat on today...looking better than I had hoped!

Evil Queen

well hopefully the last coat is dry and looks good.....I'm afraid to go look. Was a bit tougher than I thought to do this roller job on the body with all the curves...had to sand out a ton of runs....but the doors look great since they were flat :hehe:

if it is a go, I'll spray a clear coat on it while the weather is nice and I can do it outside and post pics later

Evil Queen
03-16-2011, 05:30 PM
Well, the paint job came out better than I expected...but the clear coat was a big ass mistake....I used clear satin and it looks like I sprayed a white cobweb over the whole thing....it better dry clear or I'll be pissed...and sanding some more

thrca
03-16-2011, 08:42 PM
FWIW, if you use acrylic and enamel together (en paint, acry clear, or vise versa), it will do very odd things. like crinkle and stuff. I have had luck sanding just a little with very fine paper and going with clear again. If you have only done a little, try a very very light coat of clear (to shield the paint from the chemical reaction), then once it dries go with a little thicker coat

If that is in fact what happened, you could just chalk it up as a lesson learned in chemistry and get clear coat to match the type of paint you used.

Evil Queen
03-16-2011, 09:47 PM
I didn't know that....I bet that is exactly what happened. Well live and learn it is....I put another coat of black satin over the clear....we'll see in the morning

thanks for that info....I'll remember that in the future!!!!

Hard to tell from the pics, but that doesnt look like a paint type mismatch. perhaps an inconspicuous location could get an extra coat to see what happens.

Time for 1 tonz?

Never!

I watched so many in the club decide to go to one tons and NO ONE is wheeling yet after a year...except you "occasionally". Nope, I can do all I want to safely and sanely with what I have. If I hit the lotto, I "might" get a rig with one tons...but Max is doing fine for me the way he is.....

Tons are over rated and retarded for most people. Just a waste of time and money and wont give you any real benefit.

I am all for tons they have been the best up grade I have ever done. I mean 3 yrs of hard wheeling and all I had to do is maintain it and change the oil. My rig was in perfect working order I just took it apart to change it up for a go fast jeep.

Nothing like wheeling and not worrying about braking. ;)

Evil Queen
11-29-2011, 10:18 PM
Yes, but you own a shop to do the work in, have the expertise (the best I might add) to do it, have access to the best stuff.....

Now, how much would it cost start to finish for me to put mine under max? All things considered, I could probably buy a rig with them cheaper than upgrading. Beef has tons and breaks constantly. I just don't wheel that hardcore...and I still want to drive Max daily. They would come in handy in Canada for sure...

Besides.....it's not like any of you wheel anymore......

I'm getting quite quick at swapping one ton into a tj. I almost have a complete bracket kit so it makes it even faster. I will come up with a good number. I have 3 ton swaps starting next month two TJs and one JK so I will let you know. :) and 2 swaps going on now in 2 TJs. It is becoming a standard thing around here :)

I'm ready to wheel when you are ;) Craig too except he really is changing his oil now.

Chop, you also have larger tires and are more throttle stupid than most as well. For the general wheeling public on 35s who do mostly two tracks, it just isn't worth it.

I've seen quite a few guys on 37s who are locked and wheel relatively hard and don't have problems on 44s too.

Now, if you do extreme rocks binding up the wheels all the time, and / or are just a dummy with throttle then it would be a good idea, but not for most.

I see a lot of different scenario's but I hear where you are coming from. and I have seen a lot of different rigs.

But if you have never ripped a knuckle off before out in the middle of the woods you would see my side when it comes too the Comfort level a big axle can give you.

For the price of one tons, I can hire a lot of repairs done in the woods. What is the average cost to someone that hires the axles put in? $8000 -$10000?

This isn't one of those, "I was just driving along..." type scenerios though either. lol

I agree that they are almost a requirement on many rigs, but I think many more people do not need them. If you read the magazines and even many forums though you would think that if you have a dirt driveway you better have 60s, which is far from accurate.

Lol true there is good and bad.

But I was doing donuts on ice with bald 38's at the mounds. If you weld the ball joints in I have found they hold up longer. Lol

I was getting ready to say I've been wheeling longer than you have been breathing and I aint got tons..

Then I remembered, That is what my first vehicke had. Twin I beam front and Dana 70 in the rear. I used to remove stumps with that front axle. Dang, that thing was a brute. What it lacked in traction could be made up for with velocity.

Then I learned to drive.

All depends on what you do. I ran a D44/9" combo on 35's for years. Broke front u-joints occasionally and a couple shafts. Then I went to alloy shafts and super joints and never had a problem all the way up to 37's. (I did blow up a D35 with 35's once) When I decided to stretch and link my jeep, I had a full width D44/9" set ready to go into it. My mindset was that it was a lighter combo and I didn't really need 60's. Then I was at the Unlimited open house and witnessed a D44 alloy stub shaft break when it got bound up between 2 logs that weren't more than 8" in diameter. I couldn't believe it. The scenario was so mild and simple that I would have never expected it to break. I realized that this is a scenario that could happen even in the LP of Michigan. So, I went with the front 60 and alloy stuff all around. Since then I have wheeled virtually all the hard stuff you see in the mags. Windrock, Harlan, Moab, South Dakota and of course Canada. 4 years of hard wheeling have netted me one broken stock inner axle shaft. Now I am running all 35 spline alloy shafts and it has held up well. I am running more horsepower than most and it works great.

I agree that for those who want to primarily wheel 2 tracks and the occasional trip to the local parks that stock or D44's is the way to go. If you don't mind the occasional repair, you cannot justify the cost of the upgrade. I may poke at someone in fun about breaking a smaller axle but I can't honestly say they are wrong. However, I enjoy the ability to have a rig that I can point wherever I want it and know it will hold up.

I keep hearing people say they want to still be able to run it down the road. What gives with that? I've driven many miles @ 50+ mph with never a problem. It will go down the road straight as can be at 65 although I don't think any lifted SWB rig is wise to run like that for an extended time.

Is it a waste of money as has been said? Not for me. I'd do it again in a heart beat.
