Kinda strange I know. But I'm looking for some none the less.

I don't think these would be worth too much to anyone besides scrap (because I've seen so little for sale, and everyone seems to hate their 3.08's) so I figure $5 for a used set? maybe $10 if it's in nice shape?

These would have been in the standard rotation/low pinion units. Supposedly in 80-86 jeeps as near as internet lore will tell me.

I don't know how common they actually were, but I am passively looking for them. I'd like several sets.

Holy crap. 2.72? I don't think I ever even heard of that. I'll look around though.

Holy crap. 2.72? I don't think I ever even heard of that. I'll look around though.

yeah, I never heard much about it either, but there's alot of sites I come across have listed carriers for 2.72-3.55 and 3.73-5.38. Including some more reputable sites. A few obscure sites listed the gears for those vehicles.

I don't expect them to be common at all, I've got a wierd project that's easily a few years down the road, and I've narrowed it down to those gear sets being one of the hardest components to track down.

I could just use a 9", but thats wayyyy beyond overkill and the parts seem to be platinum plated. I've got a few other diffs to try if this really proves fruitless. I've got plenty o' time at the moment.

*beefy you have a PM

I want to try to keep this on the gears and not ripping apart my ludicrous brain wanderings.

Some more info:

http://www.cj7jeep.com/info/axle/dana30.html

Close to the bottom of the "CJ Dana 30s" section. 80-86 CJ's supposedly came with 2.72

http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com (http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/categories/used-parts/used-randp/products/product-5844.html)

www.drivetrainspecialists.com lists a good, used 2.72 ratio. So I guess they are out there. I think the price is a little steep, but I'll assume it's in pretty good shape as it says and has had fancy checking done on it for cracks and weaknesses.

This fellow has a destroyed set apparently :sadpanda:

Another site making mention of a 2.73 ratio for '80-'86 Jeeps, just above "Wrangler Dana 30"

This was kind of a neat thing, saw it on another site. It is what it says it is, and sure enough, Page 43 shows a CJ with a front D30 with available 2.72 ratio. And on Page 69 shows the CJ with a rear AMC20 available with a 2.72 ratio.

A craigslist ad in Atlanta Ga. for one with 2.72's.

SO, they are in fact out there. Though with no surprise, not that common at all. I'll keep looking though. The $75 for the set on Drivetrainspecialists.com isn't too bad for a set that is ensured to be a good set, but like I mentioned, it's probably been magnafluxed, super cleaned, and all sorts of stuff. I'm open to offers.

The old scout I got a while back had some kind of odd gear like that. The front pinion was smoked though.

i know the 44s had 2.73 gears in the waggys. maybe switching from the 30 to a 44 might be easier to find the gears.

do i know the project, or is it a new one?

New one. I've got most of what I need for Red Ranger. Waiting on getting the proper equipment now and the more expensive parts. (which who knows how long that will take)

I can't really do any work at all yet because I still need to replace Deathtraps transmission and get that out of there. Which I may be picking up a replacement as soon as this weekend. God I'm sick of working on that thing though...

Hmm... I'll give this a bump.

Still passively searching for more of these.

yeah, I've found some of similar ratio's for 9"s too. Still pushing forth on the Dana 30 stuff.

On the other hand, I may get back to you about the D44 sets... *ponders
